寓樓的窗前有好幾棵梧桐樹（sycamore），這些都是鄰家院子里的東西，但在形式上是我所有的，因為它們和我隔著適當的距離，好像是專門種給我看的，它們的主人，對于它們的局部狀態也許比我看得清楚；但是對于它們的全體容貌怕始終沒看清楚呢。因為這必須隔著相當的距離方才看見。唐人詩云：“山遠始為容。”我以為樹亦如此。自初夏至今，這幾株梧桐樹在我面前濃妝淡抹，顯出了種種的容貌。

Standing at a proper distance from me. they seem to be specially planted for me. Their owner may be able to get a better view of their partial state than I am. but I’m afraid that their owner has never seen them as a whole clearly, which can’t be seen without getting far enough.
