我剛剛埋下頭，又聽見小鳥的叫聲，我再看，桂樹枝上立著一只青灰色的白頭小鳥，昂起頭得意地歌唱，屋頂的電燈線上，還有一對麻雀在吱吱喳喳地講話。我不了解這樣的語言，但是我在鳥聲里聽出了一種安閑的快樂，它們要告訴我的一定是它們的喜悅的感情，可惜我不能回答它們，我把手一揮，它們就飛走了。我的話不能使它們留住，它們留給我一個園子的靜寂，不過我知道它們過一陣又會回來的。現在我覺得我是這個園子里唯一的生物了，我坐在書桌前俯下頭寫字，沒有一點聲音來打擾我。我正可以把整個心放在紙上。
I don’t understand the language of birds, but I can sense the easy merriment from birdsong. What they mean to convey to me must be their ecstasies, but it is not in my power to make a reply. With a wave of my hand the birds fly away. My words can not make them stay and they leave me a silent garden. However. I know that they will go on a return trip after a while. Now I feel like I’m the only creature in this garden. I sit at my desk and lower my head to write, with nothing to bring about any disturbance so that I could concentrate all my mind on the paper.
